Helen Humphreys Joins the 2013 Festival Lineup

Humphreys_HelenThe North Shore Writers Festival is thrilled to announce that Canadian literary superstar, Helen Humphreys, will be joining this year’s festival on April 20th.

Helen is the award-winning author of four books of poetry, six novels, and two works of creative non-fiction. At the festival, she will speak about writing her newest memoir, Nocturne, about the life and death of her brother, Martin, set to be published in March.

Nocturne was named by The National Post as one of its 13 most anticipated books of (the first half) of 2013. The Post’s Afterword blog described the book by saying:

“Get your Kleenex ready. Humphreys, whose last book, The Reinvention of Love, only came out in late 2011, delivers her second book of non-fiction, a memoir about the death of her beloved younger brother, an accomplished pianist who died of cancer in his forties. For those left behind.”

North Shore Writers’ Association Announces 2013 Contest

Our friends at the North Shore Writers’ Association are sponsoring their 17th annual writing contest with more than $500 in prizes and publication! The winners will be announced at our Festival Reception on April 20th. Hurry, because submissions are due at the end of the month. Here are all the details:

Deadline:
Submissions must be in print and postmarked February 28, 2013

Prizes for each category:
1st Prize: $100.00 and publication
2nd Prize:
$50.00 and publication
3rd Prize:
$25.00 and publication
Honorary mention:
at the judges’ discretion

Winners will be announced at the North Shore Writers Festival reception on April 20th, and winning entries will appear in the 2013 NSWA Anthology

Categories:

Fiction: up to 2000 words per entry
Non-fiction: up to 2000 words per entry
Poetry: a submission of one to three poems constitutes one entry

Fee per entry:
$20 per entry for non-members, $15 per entry for members.
Please make your cheque payable to the North Shore Writers’ Association.

Submissions:
Include a separate cover page with your name, address, telephone, e-mail and titles of your entries. Do not show your name anywhere on your manuscript.

Your entry must be double spaced for prose, single spaced for poems. Use Roman font, size 12 on 8 1/2 X 11 inch, white pages. Submit unpublished material only and keep a copy. Manuscripts will not be returned. Blind judging is in effect. Winners will be notified at the beginning of June.

Evelyn Lau at NSWF 2013
